01How YouTube serves video
What you are actually getting
The specifics for YouTube, so nothing about your download is a surprise.

Above 1080p, YouTube stops serving a single combined file. Video and audio arrive as two separate DASH streams, and something has to stitch them back together — we do that on our server so you get one playable MP4.

The last resolution available as one ready-made file is 360p. That is why some downloaders mysteriously cap out there: they never implemented merging.

High resolutions are encoded in VP9 or AV1, which are smaller but not universally supported. We prefer H.264 whenever it exists at the same resolution, because a file that will not open is worse than a file that is 20% larger.

Shorts are ordinary videos with a vertical 1080×1920 frame, so everything on this page applies to them too.

Live streams have no finished file until the broadcast ends and the replay is published.
02Limits, stated plainly
What will not work
Every downloader has these. Most sites hide them until you have already tried three times.
- Age-restricted videos will not resolve
- Those require a signed-in session. We deliberately do not keep logged-in accounts on the server, so we would rather tell you no than quietly attach someone's identity to your download.
- 60fps is a separate row
- 1080p and 1080p60 are genuinely different files. We list both rather than silently picking one, because a 60fps source cut to 30fps is a real quality loss for gaming and sports footage.
- Private and members-only videos are impossible
- Not difficult — impossible. The file is never served to an anonymous request, so no tool can reach it.

Can I download YouTube videos in 1080p or 4K?
Yes. Paste the link and every resolution the video was uploaded in appears with its file size. Anything above 360p is stitched from separate video and audio streams on our server and arrives as a single MP4.
Why do some videos only offer 720p?
Because that is genuinely the highest the creator uploaded. We list what exists — we never invent a resolution by upscaling, which would only make the file bigger without adding detail.
How do I get just the audio from a YouTube video?
Switch to the Audio only tab. You get the original untouched track (no re-encode, best quality) plus MP3 at 320, 192 and 128 kbps if you need something that plays everywhere.
Does this work with YouTube Shorts?
Yes, exactly the same way. Copy the Short's link and paste it — it will come back as a vertical MP4.
Is there a length limit?
Anything up to four hours resolves normally. Beyond that a desktop tool is genuinely a better fit, because the download alone can run longer than a browser tab reliably stays open.
