Where downloads go on an iPhone (and how to get them into Photos)
On an iPhone, a video you download in Safari or Chrome goes to the Files app under Downloads — not to Photos. Getting it into your camera roll is two extra taps, and this guide covers both.
iOS deliberately keeps browser downloads away from your photo library. This confuses a lot of people into thinking the download failed, when the file is sitting exactly where iOS put it.
Finding the file
- Open the Files app (it is pre-installed; search for it if you cannot see it).
- Tap Browse, then On My iPhone, then Downloads.
- Your video is the newest item there.
Moving it into Photos
- Tap and hold the video in Files, then choose Share.
- Choose Save Video. It now appears in your Photos app, in Recents.
- You can delete the copy in Files afterwards if you do not want it stored twice.
If the download does not start at all
Safari occasionally blocks a download that begins without a direct tap. Tap the download button again rather than waiting — the second tap is treated as a deliberate user action and goes through.
Very large files can also fail on a weak connection. If a 700 MB 4K file keeps stopping, pick a smaller row: 1080p is usually a third of the size and looks identical on a phone screen.
A note on storage
Video is large. A ten-minute 1080p clip is comfortably 150–250 MB, and 4K can be three times that. The file size shown next to each option before you download exists precisely so you can make that call before your phone fills up.
