4K, 1080p, 720p: what you actually need
For a phone screen, 1080p is almost always the right choice: 4K is three to four times the file size and you cannot see the difference. 4K only earns its megabytes on a large screen, or if you plan to crop or edit.
Resolution is the number everyone knows
Resolution is how many pixels tall the picture is. 1080p means 1080 rows; 4K (2160p) means 2160. Doubling the height roughly quadruples the pixel count, which is why a 4K file is so much larger than a 1080p one.
The catch is your screen. A phone display physically cannot show more than about 1080 rows in the space a video occupies. Downloading 4K to watch on a phone means storing three times the data to see exactly the same thing.
Frame rate matters more than people expect
30fps and 60fps are genuinely different, and it is far more visible than the jump from 1080p to 4K on most content. Fast motion — sport, gameplay, anything panning quickly — looks noticeably smoother at 60.
This is why 1080p and 1080p60 are listed as separate rows rather than silently merged. For a talking-head video the difference is negligible; for a gameplay clip it is the whole point.
Bitrate is the quality nobody mentions
Two 1080p files can look completely different if one was encoded at 2 Mbps and the other at 10 Mbps. Bitrate is how much data per second is spent describing the picture, and it is what actually determines whether fast motion turns into a blocky mess.
This is why a Vimeo 1080p download is often larger than a YouTube 1080p download of similar length. Vimeo encodes at a higher bitrate. Those extra megabytes are real detail, not waste.
Codecs: H.264, VP9 and AV1
A codec is the compression method. H.264 is the old, universally-supported one. VP9 and AV1 are newer and produce smaller files at the same quality, but not every device, editor or TV can play them.
When the same resolution is available in more than one codec, we hand you H.264 in an MP4 container. A file that is 20% larger but opens everywhere is a better outcome than a smaller file that your video editor refuses to import.
So what should you pick?
- Watching on a phone or tablet: 1080p. Anything more is storage you will not see.
- Watching on a TV or a large monitor: 4K if it exists and your connection can handle it.
- Editing, cropping or slowing down footage: take the highest available — you need the extra pixels as headroom.
- Tight on data or storage: 720p is genuinely fine for most content and often less than half the size of 1080p.
